About the direction
Biathlon is a winter sport that involves skiing and shooting, with athletes racing and shooting at certain intervals, meaning competing twice (shooting while standing and shooting while prone). Biathlon originated in Norway in the late 17th century. In the 1718 Swedish-Norwegian War, soldiers were fully armed in the battlefield. Until now, the emblem of the city of Lillehammer in Norway has a depiction of a skier and shooter. Biathlon has often been considered a "military sport" for a long time. In 1948, the International Modern Pentathlon and Biathlon Union (UIPMB) was established, with more than 70 countries joining since then (1991). World Championships have been held since 1958, and it became a part of the Winter Olympic Games program in 1960. Since 1984 (France), a women's World Championship has also been organized.
