Karate is a martial art and sport. It originated in Japan. The word Karate means "empty hands". The sport of Karate was created by a Japanese man named Gichin Funakoshi. Karate is a form of combat that focuses on self-defense and striking vulnerable areas of the body with hands or feet. The modern rules of Karate were developed in the early 20th century, based on the principles of the Japanese martial art Jiujitsu. The initial techniques and rules were created by Gichin Funakoshi. Karate practitioners compete on an 8x8 meter mat, either individually or in teams, and winners are determined based on the points awarded for successful strikes.
