Wrestling is the national sport of the Uzbeks. Wrestling is a sport that is a one–on-one duel between two athletes according to established rules. The art of combat has been known among many peoples since ancient times. Wrestling became especially widespread in Greece, where it took a permanent place in the ancient Olympic competitions. Various forms of national struggle exist in Greece, Italy, Japan, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and other countries. The basic rules of modern wrestling were developed in a number of European countries in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1912, the International Amateur Wrestling Federation (FILA) was established (now it includes 144 countries, Uzbekistan has been a member since 1993).
