Originally, the word street simply meant a paved road. The word street is still informally used as a synonym for road, for example in connection with the old Watling Street, but urban dwellers and city planners draw a crucial modern distinction: the primary function of a road is transportation, and streets facilitate communication with the community. Examples of streets are pedestrian streets, boulevards, and downtown streets that are too congested for road traffic. In contrast, freeways and highways are a type of road, but they are called streets.
